I respect the right for people to support Trump, but not those that actually do

For those of you confused or intrigued by the title, please let me clarify: I respect the right of every American citizen to support any political candidate they so choose. That right is one of the foundations of our country and, objectively speaking, I will always support that ideal.

However, just because I respect the right of all Americans to support whomever they so choose does not mean I respect those that choose to support bigoted, inexperienced, and altogether intolerant candidates. In reference to this election, I am of course speaking of the one and only Donald J. Trump.

Here are a few reasons why:

As a member of the LGBTQ community, I cannot respect those who support a candidate running on the most anti-LGBTQ platform in recent memory. Should the proposed changes in this platform come about, I would no longer be held in equal standing with a heterosexual person. I cannot respect those who do not view me and my community as worthy of equal rights.

As a son and brother, I cannot respect those who support a candidate proposing we take away the rights of women to choose what they can and cannot to their bodies. Nor can I respect those who support a candidate that has such a low regard for women.

As a journalist, I cannot respect those who support a candidate that bans media organizations that portray him in an unfavorable way. Maybe people need a refresher, but the First Amendment grants freedom of the press and any Presidential candidate that seeks to undermine that should not be allowed to lead our country.

As a descendant of immigrants (just as many, many Americans are in this country), I cannot respect those who support a candidate suggesting we build walls or ban religious groups. Imagine how many of us wouldn’t be here today if our forefathers had that same mentality.

As a rational adult, I cannot respect those who support a candidate that spreads fear, hatred, and bigotry as ways to approach and solve issues when it comes to both domestic and foreign policies. Embracing those tactics will only create more issues in an already tumultuous world.

As one who believes in scientific facts, I cannot respect those who support a candidate that refers to global warming as “bullshit” or a “hoax” and who has a running mate with even more extreme views on the issues.

As someone who believes the position of POTUS is one of great responsibility and self-sacrifice, I cannot respect those who support a candidate that has zero government experience, shows little respect to the actual duties of the President, and who, overall, has treated the entire election process as some sort of reality show contest.

Ultimately, I cannot respect people who support a candidate that thrives on creating chaos, division, and doesn’t have the best interests of ALL Americans in mind when considering the future of this country.

As our current First Lady so eloquently put it at the DNC yesterday, America is great already. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But these improvements will never come to be should Donald Trump become our next President.
